Novel herbicide bipyrazone for the control of resistant shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik.) in wheat

    • Bipyrazone is a novel 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor, which was registered in 2018 in China. To detect the resistant levels to bipyrazone, 35 populations of shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik.) that might have herbicide resistance were collected from winter wheat fields in China with over 20 years tribenuron-methyl application history, and 1 susceptible population was collected from roadside in China. The resistant levels of Shepherd's purse populations to bipyrazone, tribenuron-methyl, florasulam, mesosulfuron-methyl, carfentrazone-ethyl and MCPA-sodium was detected by the whole-plant dose-response assay in the greenhouse. The results showed that 28 populations were resistant to tribenuron-methyl. Among them, 4 populations including K16009, K17005, 15053 and 17003, showed high levels of resistance. In the subsequent experiments, populations K16009, K17005, 15053 and 17003 were selected to evaluate the resistance to other herbicides. Populations K16009, K17005 and 15053 also showed high levels of cross-resistance to florasulam and mesosulfuron-methyl with resistant indices ranging from 25 to 321. Their GR50 value was significantly higher than the registered field recommended rates. However, all those four tested populations were still sensitive to bipyrazone, carfentrazone-ethyl and MCPA-sodium. Especially, their GR50 value were lower than the registered field recommended rates. Carfentrazone-ethyl and MCPA-sodium could be used to control the resistant shepherd's purse in wheat, but strict timing of herbicide application was necessary. The results indicated that bipyrazone could control the acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) inhibitor-resistant shepherd's purse populations effectively.
